The Windmills (Kato Milli)

Additional Details

The Mykonos windmills in the Kato Milli complex are the most iconic landmarks on the island. They were originally built for very practical purposes—to use the gusty winds off the Aegean Sea to grind locally grown wheat and barley to make flour.

Though it is reported that there were as many as 28 windmills on the island, there are now only 16 with some fully renovated and others converted into other structures. The five windmills that make up the popular landmark are just a few meters from Little Venice and it is often recommended you visit in the early morning if you want to enjoy them with fewer tourists and in the evening to take in a magnificent sunset surrounded by these ethereal structures.
