The moniker of this capital city was originally given in the late 15th century when it was called San Juan Bautista after St. John the Baptist. In the early 1500s, it was renamed as San Juan, when Juan Ponce de Leon became the Spanish governor of the island.

It is these early beginnings that form what is now known as Old San Juan. The 500-year-old neighborhood is home to over 400 restored 16th and 17th century Spanish colonial buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, brightly painted homes, plazas, forts, beaches, parks, and a long roster of museums, including Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico and a book museum, Casa del Libro (House of the Book).

Hotel El Convento

If you’re looking for European-style classic luxury, then Hotel El Convento should meet your criteria. As its name suggests, this 370-year old landmark was originally built as a Carmelite convent and converted to a 58-room hotel in 1962.  While it is the oldest member of the Historic Hotels of America, Hotel El Convento has modern amenities including a plunge pool, jacuzzi, 24-hour fitness center, onsite restaurant, beach club and more.

Accommodations are decorated with furnishings befitting the history of the building—handcrafted furniture, Andalusian tiled floors, and exposed mahogany beams. The brightly painted walls and colorful decor of the rooms instill a sense of warmth and invite you to relax and unwind.

Don’t just take our word for it. Hotel El Convento was ranked #4 in the Condé Nast Traveller 2019 Readers’ Choice Awards as one of the Best Hotels in the Atlantic, the Caribbean and Central America.
